A Complete Slovenia Road Trip Itinerary in a Motorhome

May 14, 2024 in Routes, Destinations, Tips for Travellers, Europe & Slovenia

This is the year that everyone discovers the beauty of Slovenia, we’re sure of it. This stunning country has gone unnoticed for too long, and it’s time for everyone to drop everything and head over. Filled with glacial lakes, hot springs, dramatic mountain ranges, and extensive forests, there is no end to the natural beauty of Slovenia. Aside from nature, Slovenia is home to picturesque villages, majestic castles, and a rich history for you to uncover. So what are you waiting for? This is the best time to visit Slovenia, so let’s start planning your adventure!

Getting to Slovenia

First, let’s cover how you’ll get to the starting line of your road trip in Slovenia. Driving from the UK to Slovenia is quite an undertaking, but if you’re up for the challenge, then go for it. You’ll cross the Channel with the Eurotunnel, or with one of many ferry options. If you’re arriving in northern France, you then drive over to Germany, south through Austria, until you reach lovely little Slovenia. If you’re arriving in the Netherlands, simply head south through Germany and Austria. This journey will likely take about twenty-three hours of driving, so plan it over several days.

Alternatively, you can fly to Ljubljana, the first destination on our Slovenia road trip itinerary. There are direct flights to the airport, and it will allow you to spend more time there. Once there, you can hire a motorhome for your trip.

Tips for driving in Slovenia

Driving in Slovenia isn’t too different from the rest of Europe, as long as you remember to stay on the right side of the road. If you’re travelling between November and March, keep in mind that temperatures will drop heavily, and you’ll need winter tyres and snow chains. If you’re travelling during the summer, you might encounter some heavy thunderstorms. These aren’t too concerning, but we recommend pulling up at the side of the road until the rain clears up rather than trying to drive through it. That’s why the best time to visit Slovenia is late spring or autumn.

Slovenia has toll roads on most major highways. So if you’re bringing your own vehicle, make sure to purchase a vignette for your journey. If you’re hiring a vehicle there, it’ll be equipped with a vignette, but check the windshield for an orange sticker to be certain!

Day 1 — Ljubljana

There’s no better way to start a road trip in Slovenia than in the bustling capital of Ljubljana. This colourful, lively city is filled with things to do. It’s right at the top of the best places to visit in Slovenia, as it has the size and population of a capital city, without losing the charm and personality. We have no doubt that you’ll be as smitten with it as we were.

Things to do in Ljubljana:

-Like many capital cities, Ljubljana is best explored on foot. So stroll through the colourful Prešeren Square and take a peek at the Triple Bridge, a marvel in architecture. You can take a walking tour through the city to learn all about its rich history, and many of these tours include a stop at Ljubljana Castle.

-One of the best ways to get a feel for a place is to visit a market. It gives you an insight into the everyday lives of people in that destination. Central Market, also known as Plečnik's Market, was designed by Jože Plečnik between 1931 and 1939. It’s located between the Triple Bridge and the Dragon Bridge, on the right bank of the Ljubljanica River, and stocked with delicious local produce.

-Explore the Old Town, of which a large part is car-free. It’s home to a vibrant cafe culture and plenty of great museums. Speaking of museums, you’ve got some great choices in Ljubljana. You could visit the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery, the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum or the City Museum of Ljubljana.

This is truly a bare-basics campsite, but if you’re looking to stay in the centre of Ljubljana without leaving your motorhome, then this is your best option. There are showers, a chemical toilet disposal, WiFi, and electric hookups. Next door, you’ll find a restaurant that can prepare breakfast with advanced notice. It’s simple, but ideal for exploring the city.

Day 2 — Lake Bled

You could easily spend a few more days in Ljubljana, but we’re on a tight schedule here. Don’t forget that this circular Slovenia itinerary will bring you back there in a few days, so you can always explore more of the city then. For now, it’s time to get behind the wheel and head to the second stop on our itinerary: Lake Bled.

You’ll quickly recognise Lake Bled, as it's one of the images most commonly associated with Slovenia. This fairytale castle and church are perched on an island, in the middle of a cobalt-blue lake, with mountains in the background. It feels too beautiful to be real, like something AI would come up with. But Lake Bled is just as stunning in real life, and you’ll soon see why it’s at the top of everyone’s list of places to visit in Slovenia.

Make sure to also stop by the nearby village of Bled, which is just as cosy and picturesque.

-One of our favourite things to do in Slovenia is right here in Lake Bled. We recommend renting a row boat to get to the island at the centre of Lake Bled. It shouldn’t take too long, and it provides the most beautiful views along the way. If you’re not too keen on rowing yourself, you can catch a gondola instead.

-Once you reach the island, head up to Lake Bled Castle. It is perched on a cliff about 100 metres above the lake and offers unparalleled views of the surrounding area. Inside the castle, you’ll find a museum that traces the history of the lake and how Bled became a tourist destination as far back as the 19th century. Fun tip: if you book a table at the Castle Restaurant, you get free entry to the castle, as well as the chance to enjoy a delicious meal!

-Take a short trip to nearby Vintar Gorge, which is about 2.5 miles to the northwest of Bled village. If you dare, cross the 1600m wooden walkway through the gorge. It was first built in 1893, but don’t worry, it’s been consistently renovated since then. It leads you all the way to the 16m high Waterfall Šum.

-If you feel like doing one more thing today, drive out to Lake Bohinj. This lake covers 318 hectares, making it the largest permanent lake in Slovenia. It’s a gorgeous expanse of water, and there are many options for water sports or hiking in the area.

Pitches are surrounded by foliage, providing a sense of privacy and tranquillity throughout the campsite. There’s a restaurant on-site that offers a delicious bite to eat, or it’s 2 kilometres to the centre of Bled.

Day 3 — Triglav National Park

We’ve got some great national parks in the UK, but Triglav National Park might just rival them! It’s the only national park in Slovenia, named after its highest mountain peak in the Julian Alps. It’s honestly one of our favourite autumnal scenic drives, which makes September or October one of the best times to visit Slovenia. But whatever month you’re here, you’ll appreciate the beauty of Triglav National Park in any season.

Things to do in Triglav National Park:

-Drive through the Vršič Pass, a high mountain pass across the Julian Alps. It has an elevation of 1,611 metres, making it the highest pass in Slovenia as well as in the Eastern Julian Alps. It’s full of hairpin bends, so definitely not for anyone who has recently passed their driving exam. Check out our guide on how to drive a motorhome in the mountains, if it helps!

-Go waterfall hunting! There are many incredible waterfalls across the national park, so lace up your walking boots and set out to see as many as you can. Boka Waterfall (the tallest in Slovenia), Kozjak Waterfall, Virje Waterfall and Peričnik Waterfall are all worth checking out.

Day 4 — Soča Valley

The Soča, also known as Isonzo, is an 85-mile-long river that flows through western Slovenia and northeastern Italy. It stands out because of its stunning emerald green colour. The Soča is a popular spot for wild swimming in Slovenia, especially during June and September when the temperatures are slightly higher.

This region is beloved by hikers, as it boasts some of the best trails in the region. You’ll find many circular and themed trails, including up to the sightseeing ridge of Mt. Tolminski Kuk.

Things to do in the Soča Valley:

-We recommend doing something on the river itself. If you’re ready for an adrenaline rush, try rafting or kayaking along these crystal-clear waters. You can also go canyoning along the edges of the river. For something a little calmer, you can go stand-up paddle boarding or fishing.

-The Soča Valley is home to two of the longest ziplines in Europe. You can either opt for the 3-kilometre descent above the Krnica Valley or the 4.5-kilometre descent in Učja Canyon.

-A vital aspect of this region is its history, namely the impact of the First World War on Slovenia and the Soča Valley in particular. You can learn more about this at the Kobarid Museum, pay your respects at the military cemetery at Bovec, and visit the symbol of resistance at the Church of Holy Spirit in Javorca.

Day 5 — Vipava Valley

Two-thirds of the Vipava Valley are protected regions, filled with an abundance of wildlife and foliage. You’ll spot flowing rivers, and rolling hills… and are those vineyards? Yes, they are, the Vipava Valley is known for its wines, with many indigenous old grape varieties.

Things to do in the Vipava Valley:

-It would be a shame to come all this way and not visit some of those vineyards. If you’re a lover of wine, be sure to plan a wine-tasting experience and get to know the distinguished wine producers of the area. You can also treat yourself to a nice bottle for later.

-There are also plenty of sober activities in the region. In Ajdovščina, you can visit the well-preserved remains of Ancient Roman fortifications. The legend goes that one of the battles between the Roman emperors was decided by the Vipava Valley’s powerful Burja wind. You can also explore Zemono Manor, which features a restaurant with delicious local delicacies. Finally, the scenic medieval hamlet of Vipavski Križ is home to a Capuchin monastery, filled with a famous ancient library and works of fine art.

-This is a great area for cycling. You can ride along the rolling hills of the valley, and spot vineyards, mansions, and churches along the way. Follow the River Vipava and stop for a dip in one of the many natural springs.

Day 6 — Koper and Piran

Two stops on the itinerary today: Koper and Piran. We’ve seen a lot of incredible nature on this Slovenia road trip itinerary, so now it’s time to see some more great cities.

Koper is a port city on the Adriatic coastline. It’s best known for its medieval old town, centred around Titov Trg. This square is lined with Venetian-influenced landmarks such as the Praetorian Palace and a Gothic-style loggia. Nearby, you’ll spot the Da Ponte Fountain, a replica of Venice's famed Rialto Bridge. It’s smaller than some other cities in Slovenia, but has a lot of character and is perfect for a morning of exploring and a good cup of coffee.

Then it’s time to head further to Piran. This resort city is considered to be one of the most beautiful destinations on the Slovenian coast. It oozes charm, with its long pier and Venetian architecture. It’s known as the birthplace of violinist Giuseppe Tartini, so expect a lot of music as you stroll through the narrow streets. Standing on the harbour, you can spot Italy to the right and Croatia to the left.

Things to do in Piran:

-Head to St. George’s Parish church, situated on a hill above Piran. It’s built in the Venetian Renaissance architectural style, and you can walk to the top of the clock tower. From the top, you can get a full view of the city, including the array of orange rooftops that characterise the city.

-Port cities like Piran are characterised by their maritime history. So head to the Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum, which features exhibits, model ships, and everything you need to know about the naval history of this area. Also, spend some time simply walking along the port for a great view.

-Get a taste of the sea while here… seafood! Piran is known for its delicious fresh catches, so be sure to try a bite. For a casual atmosphere or to-go meal, try Fritolin pri Cantini. If you really want to go out and have a Michelin-worthy meal, head to Marina Restaurant.

Day 7 — Return to Ljubljana

All good things must come to an end, including this Slovenia road trip itinerary. It’s time to head back to Ljubljana. This should take about an hour and a half of driving, but you can also plan stops along the way, for example, at the Skocjan Caves. This cave system is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and you can take a guided tour that lasts about an hour and a half. It’s a magical sight, filled with archaeological discoveries and incredible feats of nature.

If you’re looking to extend your trip to Slovenia, consider heading to the east. While it may not feature that stunning coastline, you’ll find plenty of great places to visit in the east of Slovenia, including Celje, Ptuj and Sveti Tomaž.

One week exploring Slovenia isn’t enough, but it’s all the time that we’ve got right now. This road trip itinerary took you through the stunning beauty of western Slovenia, including a stop at the beloved capital, and time in one of the best national parks in the country.
