Itinerary for a Wicklow Road Trip in a Motorhome

August 5, 2024 in Routes, Destinations, Tips for Travellers & Ireland

Wicklow is one of our favourite weekend breaks from Dublin, at only an hour and a half drive away from the capital. Renowned for the Wicklow Mountains, the Irish Sea and the beloved Wicklow Way, it’s no wonder this region is called the Garden of Ireland. So, without further ado, here is a complete route for a Wicklow road trip, which is best completed in a motorhome.

Day 1 — Wicklow

We’ll start this Wicklow road trip route in the town of Wicklow itself, although if you’re coming from Dublin or the north, you might want to tackle this itinerary in reverse. Wicklow is known for its stunning gardens and greenery. It doesn’t see the need to separate nature and urban landscapes; instead, it welcomes the untamed foliage into its very streets. It is steeped in Viking history, amongst other periods, and you’ll find many great places to eat. Beware, Wicklow is also beloved by shoppers, and you’ll find great independent stores around every corner.

-One of the spookier things to do in Wicklow, but worth a visit, is the Wicklow Gaol tour. Thanks to talented and passionate actors, you’ll get a glimpse into the stories of the men, women and children imprisoned here under British rule. It’s family-friendly and very engaging, bringing history to life in the perfect rainy-day activity.

-Wicklow is a coastal town, and that means one very important thing: beach time! There are many great beaches in and around Wicklow. If you’re willing to drive a bit, head to the popular Brittas Bay Beach, which is both a Special Area of Conservation and a Blue Flag beach. A closer option is the peaceful Glen Strand, which features great cliff walks as well.

-If you’re graced with some un-Irish sunshine, be sure to enjoy it while you can at one of the many outdoor sights in Wicklow. The National Botanic Gardens are a gorgeous sight on a warm day and popular with the locals. Alternately, stroll through the Mount Usher Gardens, which date back to 1868 and cover twenty acres of land. Situated along the River Vartry, it is home to over 5,000 plant species.

Staying at: Wolohan’s Silver Strand

It’s always tricky to find overnight parking in a city like Wicklow, so we recommend heading just outside of the city to Wolohan’s Silver Strand. This motorhome campsite offers spacious grassy pitches, with or without an electric hook-up, all of which offer a glorious sea view. Is there a better way to start your day than drinking coffee and gazing out at the dazzling blue of the Irish Sea?

Day 2 — Glendalough and Glenmacnass

After you’ve had your fill of Wicklow, it’s time to head further to the next stop on our road trip in Wicklow National Park. It’s a short drive to Glendalough, which is the first of two stops today. This glaciated valley is a sight to behold, and you’ll quickly understand why it is so popular with hikers and bikers alike. There is a surprising amount of history dotted around this natural beauty, so keep your eyes peeled and plan a stop at the visitor centre to learn more.

Then, it’s time to head slightly further to the Glenmacnass Valley, which is best known for its waterfall. This is a popular photo stop and a great place to stretch your legs once more before heading to your campsite for the night.

Things to do in Glendalough and Glenmacnass:

-You can’t leave the Glenealo Valley without stopping at Saint Kevin’s Pool. This secluded walk leads you through lush forests to a gorgeous hidden pool. The water is a beautiful deep copper from the rich nutrients in the mud and flows gently along the rock formations—an incredible sight.

-Glenmacnass Waterfall is considered by many to be one of the best waterfalls in all of Ireland — do you know how many waterfalls are dotted across the Emerald Isle? You can opt to hike right to it or make it part of a longer journey with one of the many trails near Glenmacnass Waterfall.

-While you’re here, consider visiting one of the most famous religious centres in Europe. One of Ireland’s most revered saints, Saint Kevin, founded a monastery here in Glendalough. You can explore the remains of this ‘Monastic City’, including the man-made cave in which he supposedly lived and prayed, which some believe to be a prehistoric burial place far predating him.

Day 3 & 4 — Wicklow Mountains National Park

Are you ready for 20,000 hectares of mountain scenery? That is a lot of mountains to cover, which is why we’re giving you two days in this gorgeous national park. Expect a lot of green, endless greenery, as the low temperature ensures that everything remains fresh here. As a result, Wicklow Mountains National Park is teeming with wildlife, flora and fauna. It attracts eager travellers who flock here for biking, hiking, birdwatching, and scenic driving. Now, let’s look at some of the best things to do here.

Day 5 - Enniskerry and Bray

The final day of our Wicklow road trip itinerary is upon us! Or, if you’re taking this route in reverse, then it’s the first day of an exciting adventure. We’re rounding off this route with two lovely villages, beloved by residents and visitors of Wicklow.

Enniskerry is just thirty minutes south of Dublin and widely known as The Gateway to Wicklow. Despite its small size, it is home to many of the best things to do in the area. This planned estate village dates back to the 1840s, with many of its original buildings presenting a neo-Tudor style. It is home to a surprising amount of celebrities, including novelist Frederick Forsyth, who wrote over 20 thrillers in his career, and popular musician Chris de Burgh.

Then it's on to Bray, a coastal town, to round off this Wicklow road trip. Bray is both a thriving urban centre and a delightful seaside resort, offering something for everyone. You’ll likely want to start with the Bray Head Cliff Walk, which leads you to the impressive Bray Head Cross.

Head back to Roundwood for the night, and make sure to toast to a great holiday!
