Prevent Motorhome Damage With These Simple Steps

July 25, 2024 in Tips for Travellers and Your first motorhome trip

It’s your first motorhome holiday - exciting! Traveller Dave was a little too excited and didn’t read up on the small things he could have done to prevent unnecessary damage, oops! We’re here to ensure you don’t make the same mistakes and get your deposit back. So don’t be like Dave, and get clued up on our top tips before you hit the road!

Fuel and water don’t mix

The tank openings on a motorhome can be in different positions from what you’re used to. Therefore, be careful not to accidentally fill the water tank with fuel. This may sound strange, but believe us, it happens! When you collect the motorhome, ask the owner which is which and take photos or add labels.

Don’t bump your behind

You can't see everything behind your motorhome, even with a camera it can be tricky. When parking or reversing, always have a fellow traveller (or ask a stranger) outside the motorhome, keeping an eye on the back. Roll down your window so that you can hear instructions loud and clear.

Don’t yawn at rolling back the awning

Windy weather could happen at any time so if you’re leaving the campervan, roll it in! When you go to sleep, roll it in! And it goes without saying but if the weather is bad, say it with us.

It's also a good idea to check the top and ensure no loose branches or items have fallen before you put it away. Man putting away a campervan awning

Are you taller than you think?

A motorhome is typically 20 to 50 cm wider and up to 3m higher than a car, so watch out for low bridges, trees, or parking barriers and garages. If not already done, ask the owner to clearly write down the height, length and width dimensions of the vehicle and stick it to the dashboard.

Honey, I lost the keys

It happens more often than you think: travellers who lock themselves out of the campervan. We recommend always keeping the keys in your pocket or bag so you don't end up locking yourself out of the motorhome.

Batten down the hatches

When driving, the pressure of the wind can easily break roof windows. Always make sure you close the windows before you set off.

All campervans are different, so it’s always good to ask the owner if they have an instruction manual for their vehicle!
